method WHO and GBD 2019: malaria + dengue + other vector-borne (mosquito ~700k), snakebite, rabies, schistosomiasis, Chagas, leishmaniasis, large animals from incident databases.
- snakes about a hundred thousand. dogs, by rabies, about sixty thousand. freshwater snails, by schistosomiasis, about twelve thousand. crocodiles about a thousand. hippos about five hundred. sharks about ten.source: WHO; GBD 2019; CrocBITE; ISAF
- sharks kill about ten people a year. people kill about a hundred million sharks. both are on this ledger.source: ISAF; Worm et al. 2013

how this number is built
- method
- WHO and GBD 2019: malaria + dengue + other vector-borne (mosquito ~700k), snakebite, rabies, schistosomiasis, Chagas, leishmaniasis, large animals from incident databases.
- range
- 0.8–1.2 million/yr
- confidence
- estimate
- weakness
- attributes vector-borne disease deaths to the vector; the parasite does the killing. the large-animal counts are order of magnitude.
- becomes a feed
- OpenAQ, air in ten thousand cities right now
